Every year, restaurant and city guide Thatsup organizes a test to find Stockholm’s best cinnamon bun. This marked the seventh year of the contest, featuring 32 jury members who tasted and evaluated 30 buns. After the jury had their say, it was clear that newcomer Eken had the winning cinnamon bun, scoring 4.34 out of a possible 5 points. MR Cake came in second with 3.94 points, followed by Vattenverket in third place with 3.88 points.
Eken, Stefan Ekengren’s bakery and café, is right next door to his restaurant, Hantverket (The Craftsmanship) on Sturegatan in central Stockholm. Eken opened in February, making this its debut in the cinnamon bun contest. Some of the jury’s comments included: “Nice shape of the knot. A lovely, toffee-like surface with a good touch of salt. Good texture!”
“A very tasty and moist bun; the filling is well-balanced, and there’s a nice saltiness.”
“A very pleasant aftertaste.”
“Looks delicious, with caramelized sugar at the bottom. Buttery and tasty. I want more!”
“This is what a bun should look like. Buttery base, nutty flavor.”
The jury tasted all the cinnamon buns entered in the competition without knowing which bun came from which bakery. Evaluations were based on appearance and taste, with each jury member assigning a score between 1 and 5 to each bun. The final score was then calculated by dividing the total points by the number of judges who had tasted that specific bun.
The participating pastry shops and bakeries were selected based on recommendations from Thatsup readers, taste tests from previous years, and the local expertise of the Thatsup editorial team. The jury consisted of Thatsup ambassadors, foodies, pastry chefs, bakers, and other food professionals and enthusiasts. To ensure the fairest possible assessment, the various jury groups began with different buns so no one would become full on the same bun.
In case your personal favorite is not among the top three, please note some bakeries and cafés that were contacted declined to participate.
